Basic Geographic Information
Rio de Janeiro is divided in a few geographic zones: “Zona Sul” (south zone), “Zona Norte” (north zone), “Zona Oeste” (west zone) and
“Centro” (downtown). Each of these zones is subdivided in “bairros” (districts).
Zona Norte – This is where Rio’s International Airport Galeão/Tom Jobim (GIG) is located, at the Ilha do Governador
district. The main bus terminal for interstate buses, “Rodoviária Novo Rio” is also located in Zona Norte.
Zona Oeste – ICPS2008 will take place at Rio Centro convention center, in Zona Oeste. Also, many suggested hotels are
located in the “Barra da Tijuca” (or simply “Barra”) district.
Zona Sul – The districts of “Ipanema” and “Copacanana”, where other suggested hotels are located, are in Zona Sul. Most
tourist destinations are also located in Zona Sul.
Centro – Santos Dumont Airport (SDU), where some local flights arrive at and departure from, is located in Centro.

To and from Rio Centro
Conference buses – During the conference, there will be special buses running from the hotels to Rio Centro and back, in the morning and in the afternoon.

Taxis – Regular (yellow) taxis to and from Rio Centro will cost around R$ 40 from and to Ipanema or Copacabana and around R$ 20 from and to Barra.
Public buses – Bus line 2113 (R$ 4, with air conditioning) runs along the Zona Sul beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon), every 10 minutes, from 5 am to 12 am, taking about 1 hour (no traffic) to go from Copacabana to Rio Centro. Buses can be picked in any public bus stop.

Shuttle Service (vans)
A special shuttle service for ICPS is available for R$ 18 to Barra and for R$ 12 to Zona Sul.

Taxi
Regular taxis (yellow vehicles) are available anywhere in town, including at the airports, and are the cheapest ones. At the airports they are located outside, in front of the arrival gates. They run on a distance/time meter. A trip from the Rio de Janeiro International Airport to Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon is around R$ 50,00 and to Barra around R$ 70.00.
Cootramo is a special taxi company (blue vehicles) which offers the ICPS participants a 10 % discount. Their offices are located within the arrival area at the airports or they can be ordered by phone (+55 21 3976 9944). At their airport stands, upon arrival you should mention you are an ICPS participant. If you need to order a taxi from them for a different route, a 10% discount will also be applied as long as you show your conference badge. To probe further, visit their website: www.cootramo.com.br.

Buses
There are air-conditioned buses from the International Airport to both Zona Sul and Barra, costing R$ 6,50. In fact, both lines end at Barra, but one of them will go through an expressway called “Linha Amarela” (yellow line) and it will take roughly 50 minutes (with no traffic). If you take this bus, you should stop at a shopping mall called “Barra Shopping” and then take a taxi from there to your hotel in Barra or to Rio Centro (it will cost roughly R$ 10). The other line will stop at Novo Rio bus terminal, Santos Dumont airport, and will go to Barra through the Zona Sul beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon districts). It will take about 2 hours to arrive in Barra, but if your hotel is in Zona Sul, it is the best choice. If you take this bus, you can ask the driver to stop near your hotel (make sure you know the street address).
These buses can be picked just outside either airport Terminal, they are colored in white, blue and gold, and the company name is Real (phone +55-21-3836-1700). They run from 5:30 am to 11:30 pm, roughly every 20-30 minutes.

ICPS-29 participants are granted special car rental conditions, with 10 % discount on the daily rate with free km.
