The International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors is a series of biennial meetings that began in 1950. This conference has been the main forum in the field, and has taken place in many countries. The most recent meeting took place in Vienna in 2006 (www.icps2006.at). In 2008, the Brazilian community will host the first issue in this series to take place in the Southern Hemisphere and, in particular, in South America.
